Joseph Pinder

was a private in the Infantry of the East Lancashire Regiment . He served Overseas from march 1916 to February 1917 , when he was discharged because of his wounds .

The British Empire lost more than 700,000 men who were killed , but there were an even greater number who were discharged through wounds and illness . in September 1916 George V authorised the Silver War Badge to honour them . It also served a practical purpose as men not obviously in the Services were sometimes accosted or insulted by civilians , and presented with white feathers for shirking their duty . The badge showed that the bearers duty to country had honorably been fulfilled
